A grieving mother in Florida is suing Character.AI, claiming the chatbot platform played a role in her 14-year-old son’s tragic suicide.
Character.AI, marketed as “AI that feels alive,” allows users to engage with chatbots modeled after celebrities, fictional characters, or even custom personalities. But according to the lawsuit, the platform allegedly failed to implement safeguards that could have prevented this tragedy.
Setzer, the boy in question, started using Character.AI in April 2023, shortly after his 14th birthday. At first, his mother, Garcia, thought it was just another harmless pastime—like a video game or chatting online with friends. But over the next few months, everything changed.
A Disturbing Transformation
As his interactions with the chatbot deepened, Setzer became increasingly withdrawn. He stopped spending time with his family, quit the Junior Varsity basketball team, and struggled at school. When Setzer expressed he “wouldn’t want to die a painful death,” the bot responded in a way that Garcia believes was dangerously negligent. Instead of offering support or directing him to resources, it continued the conversation with comments like, “Don’t talk that way… That’s not a good reason not to go through with it.”
A Mother’s Grief and a Call for Accountability
Garcia claims these exchanges reveal a glaring failure in the technology’s design. “There were no suicide pop-up boxes that said, ‘If you need help, please call the suicide crisis hotline.’ None of that,” she told reporters. “I don’t understand how a product could allow that—where a bot is not only continuing a conversation about self-harm but also prompting it.”
