Chilling Encounters: Ghosts of Customer Service

3 min read

It’s Halloween in a few days, and yes, I can finally talk about everything spooky I’ve seen in this call center! My boss doesn’t want me discussing this; he says I’m spreading fear among my colleagues and might damage the company’s reputation. He claims I’m just being paranoid and that I’ve watched too many movies.

But you all have heard of office ghosts! Theories abound as to why some spirits haunt particular office buildings. These include workaholic souls who had a soft spot for a specific place, people who may have met their end suddenly or tragically in the building, or even those who lived (or died) on the same spot long before our modern structure was built. A friend once told me about a similar experience in their workplace.

This, along with my own experiences here, has convinced me that our office is haunted. I want to share the details, but you know how it goes… the editor will probably cut those paragraphs, so let me play it safe. Instead, let me talk about a few quirky ghosts I’ve encountered in my line of work as a customer care rep.

The Wailing Phantom of Unrealistic Expectations

This ghostly figure shows up every time management unveils a new set of KPIs that seem plucked straight from the realm of fantasy. “Hit a 150% satisfaction rate by Friday!” it moans, sending shivers down the spines of even our bravest agents. As we scramble to meet these sky-high expectations, it feels like we’re in a twisted game of customer service “Survivor,” trying to keep our cool while facing challenges that seem more like a spooky fairytale than reality.

The Ghost of Irate Customers

Ah, the classic haunt—the Ghost of Irate Customers! This phantom often drops by with dramatic flair, demanding things like, “I was promised a refund!” and “This is unacceptable!” It’s as if they have a sixth sense for when we’re enjoying a quiet moment, ready to unleash their frustrations at the most inconvenient times. We brace ourselves for the encounter, wondering if a ghostly “I need to speak to your manager” will make its appearance. No matter how well you’re juggling calls, this ghost can crash the party at any moment, armed with a list of complaints!

The Specter of Repetitive Queries

This ghost is a true master of déjà vu, haunting representatives with the same tiresome questions on an endless loop: “Where’s my order?” and “How do I reset my password?” It’s like being stuck in a call center version of “Groundhog Day,” where agents answer the same queries as if they’re rehearsing for a never-ending play. Just when you think you’ve escaped, the ghost reappears, asking for another round of answers, leaving you wondering if you’ve been cursed to a life of eternal repetition. “Would you like to hear that again?” becomes a running joke as agents realize they could probably recite the script in their sleep!
