The pressure
The second month of the year, beautifully short and loaded with relational pressure and expectation from all types of people; Parents expect recognition of their union, those with Intimate partners expect gifts from the other, and those that haven’t been fortunate enough to find themselves in a Romantic involvement expect to land someone special. These are just but a few examples which make a lot of expectations going around if you ask me. Expectations in themselves are not a bad thing but in their heightened state can have a detrimental impact not only to the relationships we hold dear but to individuals’ mental state.
Decompress
With maintaining a healthy state of well-being both emotionally and psychologically in mind, it is important to recognize these stressors and pressure points and unplug from them. Easier said than done for sure but with the following practical steps I believe will be doable.
- Cognitive Restructuring: Involves challenging negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones, the art of seeing situations in a more positive light
- Embrace a healthy choices mindset, where you eat a balanced diet, hydrate, exercise, and have proper sleep duration and patterns.
- Be grateful: Gratitude helps one focus on the positive aspects of life which removes one focus from the negatives.
- Disconnect from technology: To disconnect from technology allows for a reduction in information overload which allows one to focus on the relationships and people around conversationally and to connect on a deeper level.
- Engage in activities you enjoy: Listen to music, engage in sports, etc. This ensures you’re filling your life with fun and taking responsibility for your well-being.
Embracing the process
Acknowledging and accepting one’s position in life is important, one might say necessary as it creates a sense of peace and freedom enabling one to be logical and sober to make decisions. In this state of mind, one can enjoy life’s process and work towards goals without panic or fret.
Disregarding the hustle and bustle of valentines, choose to remember it’s a time to celebrate your loved ones, however, that looks like to you.
